Reshmi's story is not just one of struggle and survival; it's a heartwarming narrative of relentless hope, unwavering courage, and the transformational power of community support.

Nestled within the bustling urban quarters of Trivandrum district in Kerala stands a modest one-room abode that Reshmi (whose name has been changed for privacy) calls home. This humble dwelling, shared with her husband and their three young children aged 5, 3, and a newborn of just 40 days, sits on the fringe of a brackish water body. Her husband's sporadic work in fabrication brings uncertainty, and with domestic responsibilities tethering her, Reshmi's dreams of wage work and financial independence remain just that — dreams.

Yet, Reshmi's aspirations persist. A bright student forced to abandon her education after the twelfth grade, marriage and motherhood swiftly followed. But her inner flame for learning and independence never flickered out.

The narrative took a precarious turn with her latest pregnancy, as Reshmi faced a daunting high-risk journey. Her health reports were troubling: anaemic, with haemoglobin levels plunging to 6.5mg/dl and a weight of merely 35 kilograms. Doctors warned of significant risks and the looming shadow of a preterm birth.

The couple's financial strains often led to missed antenatal checkups and skipped medications. Nutrition was a luxury, as Reshmi's daily sustenance included little more than leftover rice and sparse curry. Yet, despite the adversity, her resolve never wavered.

The L&M Foundation and its implementing partner SOMA, witnessing Reshmi's determination, stepped in to weave a network of care and support efforts of government hospital, local health and nutrition workers in guiding Reshmi. We ensured she received the necessary diagnostic services and medications. Nutritional support helped bolster her health, and the psychosocial aid from our dedicated team was a salve to her soul.

When January unfurled its new beginnings, Reshmi's resilience bore fruit — a healthy baby girl was born. The delivery was not without its challenges, necessitating a blood transfusion due to Reshmi's anaemia.

Today, Reshmi looks to a horizon filled with promise. "Once my baby is six months old, I hope to work at a nearby nursery," she shares with optimism. "We aim to move to a more spacious home." Her voice rings with a profound truth, "As women, we need to take care of ourselves, be strong, manage everything, and keep our expectations realistic."

Reshmi's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Her story, emblematic of the challenges faced by many, underscores the crucial need for accessible and affordable quality antenatal and postnatal care — a cause L&M Foundation is deeply committed to.
